MA BTS Now Offered in Sacramento

Sacramento Campus Approved to Offer
Biblical and Theological Studies program

As of fall 2009, Western Seminary Sacramento campus will offer its students the Master of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies program (MA BTS). For the first time in the history of the Sacramento campus, every degree program offered may be completed entirely in Sacramento.

On June 3, 2009 Western Seminary received approval to grant the MA BTS degree at its Sacramento campus from both of its accrediting agencies: the Association of Theological Schools and Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. Previously, students in the MA BTS program could complete some coursework at Sacramento campus, though a minimum of 30 credits (residency) were to be completed at other Western campuses. This new approval means that effective in the fall ’09 term, the requirement for earning residency at the other campuses will disappear for all current MA BTS students, as it has for all of our other Masters degree programs over the past 6 years. The recent addition of new faculty and additional library resources are the qualities that have helped Western attain new program approval.

The Master of Arts in Biblical and Theological Studies is Western’s most “academic” degree, combining 64 credits of Greek, Hebrew, theology, Church history and Bible courses into a two-year training program. While the MA BTS degree may not open as many doors of opportunity as the three-year pastoral ministry oriented Master of Divinity program, it may be preferable for older seminary students with significant practical ministry training already, or for students wanting to “fast-track” towards higher academic degrees (Th.M. or Ph.D.).
